Enzym Feed Solutions Yeast Products: What We Offer for Various Types of Poultry

Iryna Matiukha, a scientist at the Enzym Group R&D center, has prepared an article for the agricultural publication Propozytsiya detailing the benefits of our products for various types of poultry. Read on to learn more about what we offer to improve the feeding of broilers, geese, chickens, and other kind of poultry.

The costliest mistake in poultry farming is not the selection of a "bad" additive; rather, it is the use of even an effective additive without considering specific conditions and production objectives. The industry is accustomed to asking, "Is this product effective?" Yet, the answer rarely lies solely within the product itself; instead, it depends primarily on how, when, and under what conditions it is applied. Consequently, modern science—while seeking new solutions—is also working to reframe the question itself.

Until recently, the primary goal of flock health management was to eliminate pathogens using appropriate antibiotics. Today, the poultry industry is shifting toward a model where prevention replaces treatment. In Ukraine, this transition is driven, in part, by new legislation regulating antibiotic use in alignment with EU requirements. This move away from antimicrobial agents has also influenced the industry's approach to feed additives.

About 10–15 years ago, the functionality of an ingredient was evaluated based on weight gain, feed conversion, and overall productivity. If these metrics improved, the additive was considered to be "working." However, evaluating any solution solely by its final outcome is akin to observing an effect without understanding its underlying cause. Today, the scientific focus has shifted from merely tracking productivity to understanding the biological mechanisms at play. It is crucial to determine under which conditions a product is most effective and how it should be applied in a real-world farming environment. This, in turn, creates a need for comprehensive research—bridging science and production—that identifies the biological prerequisites for specific outcomes.

The Paradox of Precision Nutrition Efficacy: Why the Same Additive Yields Different Results

The philosophy of modern poultry nutrition is rooted in the concept of "Precision Nutrition," which centers on moving away from one-size-fits-all standards. This means that the efficacy of a functional ingredient depends not only on its composition but also on how well it aligns with the specific environment. Outcomes are influenced by a range of factors: the species and genetics of the birds, their age, productivity levels, health status, stress levels, and the condition of their gut microbiota.
In other words, the same additive can produce vastly different results depending on the conditions. For one farm, its use might yield only a marginal gain, while for another, it could significantly improve economic performance. To achieve maximum impact, precision nutrition requires tailoring functional solutions to the specific conditions of an individual farm. Since average efficacy figures often lack sufficient detail, researchers identify the specific operational parameters within which a feed component delivers the best results.

Beyond the Diet: Where Rearing Efficiency Is Forged

The gut is the cornerstone of precision nutrition; it is here that functional feed additives unlock their full biological potential. Broadly speaking, "gut health" encompasses the establishment of a stable microbiota, the maintenance of the epithelial barrier, the proper functioning of the mucus layer, and the regulation of local immunity. This serves as a fundamental prerequisite for nutrient absorption, which in turn dictates poultry productivity.

Ingredients with diverse mechanisms of action are employed to support these intestinal functions. These include yeast components (beta-glucans, mannan-oligosaccharides, metabolites), fractions (extracts, cell walls), and various forms (postbiotics, prebiotics, and probiotics based on yeast). However, simply choosing any yeast product is not enough to achieve the maximum practical effect. It is crucial to clearly understand which specific ingredient addresses the required intestinal function under the particular conditions of a given farm. Efficacy is determined not only by the characteristics of the ingredient itself but also by how well its mechanism of action aligns with the physiological state of the poultry and the specific production environment.

The Evolution of Technology: From Raw Material to Targeted Effect

As the industry has evolved, so too have yeast-based solutions. In the past, yeast additives were traditionally viewed merely as an additional source of protein. Today, they represent a biotechnological platform encompassing functional feed products—derived from yeast cells—that vary in origin, composition, and intended purpose.

Notably, rather than simply drying biomass, modern biotechnology companies employ a complex array of processes: from selecting specialized strains and optimizing fermentation parameters to conducting controlled hydrolysis, purifying specific cell fractions, and standardizing the content and levels of biologically active substances. Ultimately, this enables the production of ingredients with predictable and guaranteed effects. A key practical implication of this diversity is that these ingredients are not interchangeable. Essentially, each of them addresses a specific biological task, thereby yielding a distinct effect tailored to the challenges faced by an individual enterprise. It is crucial to understand the key points of action and the biological targets for each of these yeast-based products; this is the prerequisite for their effective use and successful integration into animal feeding programs.

Precision Feeding in Action: How Enzym Group Solutions Perform in Real-World Poultry Facilities

The shift from generalized approaches to precision nutrition is being put to the test in actual industrial settings. Scientific and production trials of Enzym Group products demonstrate how specialized yeast-based solutions address specific business challenges across various poultry farming sectors.

Broilers: Raising Poultry Without Antibiotics

Poultry raised without the use of feed-grade antibiotics requires additional support for health and immunity. To improve overall well-being, hydrolyzed yeast—specifically *NutriLys*—was added to the broiler diet. Thanks to its high bioavailability, this product promotes tissue regeneration, enhances intestinal function, and bolsters the birds' immune systems. Research showed that a 0.6% inclusion rate of *NutriLys* boosted productivity by 11.58% and improved the feed conversion ratio (FCR) to 1.50, while a 0.3% inclusion rate resulted in a 5.4% productivity increase and an FCR of 1.59 (compared to 1.67 in the control group). This solution maintained growth rates while reducing feed costs.

Laying Hens: Strengthening the Body During the Laying Period

To support the productivity of laying hens, the probiotic yeast *EnzActive* was incorporated into their diet. The addition of this supplement led to an increase in egg production and an improvement in the feed conversion ratio. Furthermore, an improvement in egg quality indicators was observed at the 25th week of the laying period. A dosage of 50–100 g/t of EnzActive strengthened the eggshells between weeks 20 and 25, which reduced the percentage of damaged eggs. The additive also mitigated the impact of stress and strengthened the tibia, thereby improving the health of the flock.

Geese: Enhanced Nutrient Absorption in Young Stock

The efficiency of raising geese depends, in part, on the nutritional value of the feed. In a trial covering the period from day-old to 21 weeks of age, EnzActive Mix—an encapsulated complex of probiotic yeast and digestive enzymes—was added to the diet. The additive stabilized the intestinal microbiota and improved digestion. At a dosage of 150 g/t, the birds' live weight increased by up to 9% compared to the control group; the laying period extended by 6.1%, average egg production rose by 8.7%, and egg weight increased by 4.1%. Consequently, the farm achieved higher yields of meat and eggs, along with improved overall performance and economic outcomes.

Meat-Type Quail: Intensive Muscle Mass Development

Profitability in meat-type quail production relies on maximizing meat yield without incurring excessive feed costs. The use of 200 mg/kg of the active yeast product EnzActive over a 35-day period accelerated metabolism during the peak phase of tissue formation. During this time, the body weight of quails fed the probiotic supplement increased by 7.8%, breast muscle mass by 5.2%, and the mass of the pelvic limbs by 12.6%, compared to birds kept on a standard diet. Furthermore, feed consumption per 1 kg of weight gain decreased by 3%, which improved the overall profitability of the poultry operation.

Research and practical experience demonstrate that modern yeast-based products are no longer merely feed ingredients; rather, they serve as precise tools for addressing specific production challenges—ranging from supporting a healthy gut microbiota and strengthening immune and antioxidant defenses to enhancing performance metrics. Their effectiveness depends not only on the product's inherent properties but also on the accuracy of its selection, its alignment with the specific biological target, and the conditions of the individual production environment. For this reason, the livestock sector is gradually moving away from "one-size-fits-all" feed additives, opting instead for feeding systems grounded in scientific data. Functional yeast technologies provide producers with a practical tool for safeguarding the health of their livestock and poultry, while simultaneously improving productivity and economic efficiency.
